Oncology is the branch of medicine dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. The term comes from the Greek word onkos (meaning "bulk" or "mass") and logos (meaning "study").
At its core, oncology focuses on understanding how normal cells turn into abnormal cells (neoplasms), how they grow, and how to effectively stop or remove them. Because cancer is a complex systemic disease, oncology is inherently multidisciplinary.
